Glossary › Answer engine
Answer engine — a system that answers instead of listing links
An answer engine takes a question and returns an answer, with citations if you are lucky, rather than a page of results to choose from.
The shift matters commercially because the ten blue links were a shop window and an answer is a verdict. If the verdict about your prices is “the site does not say,” that is what the buyer hears, and no amount of well-ranked content four clicks down changes it.
The other half of the shift is that you are being described from memory as well as from a fetch. Asked about twelve real companies by name with no tools, models produced the correct website 17 times out of 72, and the failures were honest ignorance rather than invention — only 1 answer in 72 was confidently wrong (Note 27). Nothing you put on a page fixes that directly, and we say so rather than selling into it.
disambiguation
What Answer engine is not
- It is not a search engine with a summary bolted on, from a buyer’s point of view. One answer replaces the comparison the buyer used to do.
- It is not a channel you can buy a place in today. Where an ad product exists it is separate from the answer.

The long version
A definition is the short answer. These go through the evidence:

Vocabulary is cheap. The measurement is the part that tells you whether any of it applies to your site.
One model fetches your homepage and answers buyer questions from it. You get the recovery score and the specific answers it could not find. That is the whole free tier: it shows you the problem, and the fix package is not included.
